The National Monument of Pakistan, also known as the
Pakistan Monument is situated in Islamabad, and is quite famous for the
historical importance and significance behind it. It is known to represent
three territories of the nation along with four provinces. There was quite a
competition between various architects for the design and construction of this
monument, and finally, it was Arif Masood’s plan that was selected as the final
design. The shape of the monument is such that it looks like a blooming flower.
This blooming flower is said to be representative of Pakistan as a developing
and progressing country.

The four main petals of the blooming flower are said to
represent the provinces of Balochistan, North West Frontier Province, Punjab
and Sindh. The three smaller petals are said to be representing the three
smaller territories of Northern Areas, Azad Kashmir and Federally Administered
Tribal Areas). When a top view of the monument is taken from air, it looks like
a star with a crescent moon. While the centre of the monument forms the star,
the walls forming the petals of the flowers look like the crescent moon. This
is exactly the reason why the flag of Pakistan holds this sign on it.
The Pakistan Monument Museum, located in Islamabad, provides
a view into the country's history as well as an understanding of the Pakistan
Movement. The museum is a tribute to Those WHO Sacrificed for the formation of
a separate Homeland for the Muslims of the sub-continent.
The monument is located at the west viewpoint of the Shakar
Parian Hills, and is spread over a total area of 2.8 hectares. The high
location makes the monument visible from across the twin cities of Islamabad
and Rawalpindi. The foundation stone was laid on 25 May 2004 and the complex
was completed by the end of 2006 for Inauguration on 23 March 2007. The total
cost Incurred was more than Rs.580 million.
The structure comprises four blossoming flower petals, built
of granite, representing the unity of Pakistani people. The inner walls of the
petals are decorated with murals. The central platform is made in the shape
of a five-pointed star the which is surrounded by a water body. A metallic
crescents Surrounding the star is inscribed with sayings of Muhammad Ali Jinnah
and poetry of Allama Iqbal.
